About This Product
Matte PLA is what you reach for when a print has to look finished, not just work. Where glossy PLA reflects light off every layer, the matting additive in this filament diffuses light across the surface — so ridges and seams visually disappear and the part reads as a soft, even, stone-like object.
The neutral slate tone reads like primed resin, cast concrete or fine pewter — the base colour that architects, miniature painters and product designers trust to show form honestly. It is display-ready straight off the bed, and the matte tooth grips primer and acrylics when you want to paint.
Produced on our own extrusion lines, every spool is held to a ±0.03mm tolerance — because even flow is what keeps a matte surface uniform — and vacuum-sealed with desiccant so it arrives dry.

Non-glossy surfaces with no blown-out highlights.
Troubleshooting Matte Prints
| Symptom | Likely Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Shiny patches breaking the matte look | Over-extrusion or nozzle too hot | Drop flow to 95–100%; lower temp 5–10°C |
| Intermittent clogging / under-extrusion | Matting additive buildup in a worn nozzle | Cold-pull the nozzle; use a hardened tip for volume |
| Filament snaps on the spool | Moisture or long cold storage | Dry at 40–45°C for 4–6h; store sealed with desiccant |
| Layer lines still visible on tall walls | Layer height too high for the detail | Drop to 0.12–0.16mm |
| Rough or fuzzy overhangs | Insufficient cooling | Run 100% fan; slow overhang layers to 30–40mm/s |
| First layer won’t stick | Bed too cool or nozzle too high | Bed 55–60°C, slow first layer, slight Z-offset down |
Recommended Print Settings
| Parameter | Recommended |
|---|---|
| Nozzle temperature | 190–220°C (205°C typical) |
| Bed temperature | 45–60°C |
| Print speed | 40–60mm/s (50 typical) |
| Layer height | 0.12–0.16mm for figurines & detail |
| Retraction | 1–2mm (direct) / 4–6mm (Bowden) |
| Cooling fan | 100% (crisp matte detail) |
| Flow | 95–100% (conservative — avoids glossy ridges) |
| Nozzle | 0.4mm brass; hardened for high volume |
| Drying (if damp) | 40–45°C for 4–6h |
Pro Tip: For the smoothest matte figurines, use a 0.12–0.16mm layer height and keep flow at 95–100% — pushing extra material creates shiny over-extruded ridges that break the matte look. The matting additive is mildly abrasive, so fit a hardened nozzle if you print matte in volume.
Painting Guide
The matte surface has a natural tooth that grips primer and acrylics far better than glossy PLA — many painters skip priming entirely and go straight to acrylics on matte prints.
Mid-gray is the ideal painting base: unlike black, which swallows shadow and makes coverage hard to judge, or white, which glares and can bleed through thin coats, a mid slate-gray gives honest tonal reference through every stage of painting. That is why so many finished miniatures and props start life as a matte gray PLA print — the surface is already halfway to a paint job before the first coat goes on.
